Kentucky returns $100M in unclaimed funds to residents

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WBKO) — The Kentucky State Treasurer has announced a major milestone for the Treasury’s Unclaimed Property Division.

Treasurer Mark Metcalf said the division has now returned more than $100 million to Kentuckians, marking the highest amount distributed at this point in any administration in the state’s history.

“We’re not talking about numbers on a spreadsheet—we’re talking about real money going back to real people,” Metcalf said in a release. “Crossing $100 million means helping Kentuckians pay bills, support their families, and invest back into their communities.”

Unclaimed property includes forgotten bank accounts, uncashed checks, insurance payouts, utility deposits, and other financial assets that have been turned over to the state for safekeeping.

In recent weeks, the Treasury has processed claims ranging from just a few dollars to tens of thousands.

“We made a decision early on: this money doesn’t belong in government accounts—it belongs in the hands of the people,” Metcalf said. “And we’re going to keep pushing until every possible dollar is returned.”

Metcalf is encouraging residents to check for unclaimed property, noting that significant funds are still available.

“There is still more money out there with someone’s name on it,” he said. “If you’ve never checked, now is the time.”
