Shots Fired Feet From Louisville Homeowner as Teens Rob Vehicle
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – A quiet Southwest Louisville neighborhood turned chaotic early Wednesday morning when gunfire erupted during a car break-in, leaving a homeowner shaken but unharmed.
James, who lives near the PRP area and asked not to be fully identified, said the situation escalated in seconds.
“Thank God. I mean, thank God I’m alive,” he said. “Got to walk back in, you know.”
According to James, he confronted someone breaking into his truck, unaware the suspect was armed—even as his home security cameras recorded the encounter.
“He hops out of my truck, fires four shots, and they proceed to go down this dead-end road,” James said. “They come back, firing all the way down the road, doing about 90 miles an hour out of the neighborhood with their headlights off.”
Bullet strikes were later visible on his home and in the yard.
The incident wasn’t only captured on his camera system but also on several neighbors’ cameras, showing suspects checking vehicles before the shooting began.
For James, this marked the second time his vehicle had been targeted this year.
“The first time, they didn’t take anything, but I got lucky. It’s because I locked the door that time,” he said. “That’s small compared to what they could have gotten.”
Police responded to the home on Locklee Road, and the investigation quickly led to a short pursuit.
Authorities arrested 18-year-old Davon Brown along with two juveniles, ages 17 and 15, after they crashed a stolen vehicle near the 3700 block of Kahlert Drive in the Jacobs neighborhood. The car had reportedly been stolen the previous day.
Police have not released the names of the minors.
Officials say this type of crime—suspects going door-to-door checking for unlocked cars—is becoming increasingly common across the city.
James hopes sharing his experience will serve as a warning.
“Keep your doors locked, and stay vigilant, because they’re out there, now they’re with guns,” he said.
Brown and the two juveniles face multiple charges, including robbery and fleeing police. Brown is being held on a $50,000 bond and would be placed under home incarceration if released. His next court appearance is scheduled for April 17.
