Kentucky brewery shuts down two Louisville taprooms amid legal troubles

A Kentucky-based brewery has closed two of its Louisville taproom restaurants as it faces multiple lawsuits over unpaid rent, debts, and taxes.

Goodwood Brewing abruptly shut down its locations at Main & Clay and Whiskey Row at 121 W. Main St. on March 30.

Owner Ted Mitzlaff confirmed the closures in an email, saying the company is undergoing a major reorganization.

“Goodwood is going through a major reorganization,” Mitzlaff said. “The Whiskey Row and NuLu operations were closed. Lexington and Frankfort are full steam ahead, and we will have some exciting news to report in the very near future.”

The brewery continues to operate locations in Lexington, Frankfort, Owensboro, and O’Fallon, Missouri.

However, the company is dealing with several legal challenges. In Jefferson Circuit Court, its landlord claims Goodwood owes about $225,000 in unpaid rent for the first three months of the year, along with unpaid property taxes tied to the Whiskey Row site.

Another lawsuit alleges the company owes more than $125,000 to Sysco Louisville, with a motion for summary judgment filed in March.

A separate case filed by vendor Creation Gardens claims Goodwood owes about $54,000, and that case remains pending.

In Daviess Circuit Court, a landlord is seeking more than $120,000 in unpaid rent for the Owensboro location, with the lawsuit naming both the company and its leadership.

Additionally, multiple Goodwood locations have been sued by the state’s Finance and Administration Cabinet over back taxes. The brewery had previously agreed in 2023 to repay more than $404,000 through installments, and that case is still ongoing.

Goodwood Brewing was founded in Louisville in 2005 as Bluegrass Brewing Co. before rebranding in 2015. The company expanded by focusing on barrel-aged beers and operating taproom restaurants serving burgers and Southern-style dishes.
