LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) — The National Weather Service in Jackson sent out a tornado warning alert during a statewide drill Wednesday, but many people said the message did not clearly state that it was only a test.
The annual statewide tornado drill was held on March 4 and is meant to give agencies and residents a chance to test emergency alert systems and safety procedures.
However, people across parts of Eastern Kentucky reported receiving alerts that appeared to show an active tornado warning rather than a drill notification.
A spokesperson for the National Weather Service said an inadvertent coding issue may have caused the message to be distributed “beyond the usual limited scale for such a test message.”
The National Weather Service office in Jackson told WKYT that officials are currently assessing the situation.
