The National Weather Service is warning eight U.S. states about potentially “extreme” storms expected on Thursday.
Strong thunderstorms with intense thunder and lightning, heavy rainfall, powerful winds, large hail and even possible tornadoes could develop throughout the day on Thursday, March 5.
The South and Midwest are likely to face the strongest impacts.
The National Weather Service has issued warnings for the following states on Thursday: Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky.
Severe weather could affect many areas throughout the week.
“Severe Weather and a several day stretch starts today across portions of the southern and central U.S.. Chances for damaging winds and hail, and tornadoes peak on Friday with an Enhanced Risk (level 3 out of 5), but all hazards look possible each day for the next week,” the NWS warned.
As a reminder, here’s what to do when severe storms hit:
Stay Weather Ready: Keep listening to local news or a NOAA Weather Radio to stay informed about severe thunderstorm watches and warnings.
At Your House: Move to a secure location if a severe thunderstorm warning is issued. Damaging winds or large hail may be approaching. Take your pets with you if time allows.
At Your Workplace or School: Stay away from windows during a severe thunderstorm warning if damaging winds or large hail are approaching. Avoid large open areas such as cafeterias, gymnasiums or auditoriums.
Outside: Immediately go inside a sturdy building if severe thunderstorms are approaching. Sheds and storage buildings are not safe. Do not take shelter under a tree. The tree could fall on you, and standing under it also increases the risk of being struck by lightning.
In a Vehicle: Being inside a vehicle during severe thunderstorms is safer than remaining outside. However, drive to the nearest secure shelter if there is enough time.
