MOUNT VERNON, Ky. (LEX 18) — Fire crews in southeastern Kentucky spent seven hours battling a severe garage fire Saturday afternoon, according to a Facebook post from the Mount Vernon Fire Department.

Around 3:30 p.m., the department responded to reports of heavy white smoke coming from the Rockcastle County Road Department’s maintenance garage. When firefighters arrived, they determined the smoke was caused by a commercial structure fire and called for additional support.

As crews worked to put out the flames, the garage roof collapsed, the department said.

“At this time, tactics switched to defensive utilizing Brodhead FD Truck 10 for an aerial master stream, a portable ground monitor and exterior handlines. A water supply consisting of a double dump tank drafting set up allowed four tankers to run a continuous shuttle operation and dump simultaneously,” the post stated.

Firefighters used about 67,000 gallons of water to extinguish the blaze. One firefighter was injured during the response and was taken to the hospital.

After seven hours of firefighting efforts, the garage sustained severe structural damage. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Multiple agencies assisted at the scene, including the Brodhead Fire Department, Livingston Fire Department, Brindle Ridge Fire Department, Western Rockcastle Fire Department, Rockcastle County EMS, Mount Vernon Police Department, Kentucky State Police, Kentucky State Fire Marshal’s Office, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Kentucky Utilities and Jackson Energy.

Officials said any additional information will come from the Rockcastle County Judge Executive’s Office.
