Brian S. Mandel, 38, pleaded guilty to terroristic threatening and criminal attempted theft by extortion over $10,000.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – The Texas man indicted for threatening UofL head football coach Jeff Brohm has accepted a plea agreement.

During a pretrial conference in Jefferson Circuit Court, Brian S. Mandel, 38, entered guilty pleas to terroristic threatening and criminal attempted theft by extortion over $10,000. All remaining charges were dismissed.

Prosecutors said Mandel called Brohm’s cell phone and left a voicemail threatening Brohm and his family. The threats followed UofL’s three-point overtime loss to California on November 8, 2025.

According to court documents, prosecutors agreed to the plea deal because they believe Mandel “never intended to act on the threats he made.” The documents also state Mandel “is sincerely remorseful and willing to address the issues that led to the conduct.” In an interview with UofL Police, Mandel admitted he made the threats after losing a sports gambling parlay bet.

The Commonwealth recommended a four-year sentence on the terroristic threatening charge. That sentence will be diverted for two years if Mandel meets diversion requirements, which include refraining from any form of gambling.

Mandel must also repay $1,190 in partial restitution to UofL Police for overtime costs and security provided to Brohm and others who were threatened.

If he successfully completes the diversion period, the charges will be expunged.
