Attorney General Russell Coleman and Commonwealth’s Attorney Gerina Wheters are challenging Judge Tracy Davis’ sentencing decision before the Kentucky Supreme Court.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – New developments have emerged following WAVE’s Troubleshooter investigation into the case involving Christopher Thompson.

Attorney General Russell Coleman and Commonwealth’s Attorney Gerina Wheters have filed an appeal of Judge Tracy Davis’ sentencing decision with the Kentucky Supreme Court.

A jury found Thompson guilty in a violent kidnapping, robbery, and sex abuse case and recommended a 65-year sentence.

Judge Davis, however, reduced the sentence to 30 years, a move that quickly drew attention from the Prosecutor’s Office and members of the Louisville Metro Council.

Now, the Attorney General is intervening over what he describes as the judge’s “abuse of discretion.”

In a statement, AG Coleman said, “The trial judge disregarded the jury’s recommendation and gave a sentence that does not at all reflect the gravity of the crimes or the harms to the victim and her family. Together with Jefferson County’s elected felony prosecutor, Gerina Whethers, we are appealing this sentence to give this family the justice the jury recommended, and they deserve.”

Thompson is currently awaiting trial in a separate case in which he is accused of assaulting an LMDC officer.
