Drivers who rely on Interstate 65 or the Watterson Expressway are already seeing the effects of ongoing construction — and a larger shutdown is still to come.

Major Summer Closure Planned

In June and July, I-65 between I-264 (Watterson Expressway) and Muhammad Ali Boulevard will be fully closed as crews rehabilitate bridges and pavement. The work is part of the I-65 Central Corridor Project, which will replace or rehabilitate at least nine bridges in Louisville.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) previously announced that several underpasses in and around Old Louisville would close for two years to prepare for the larger project.

Old Louisville Feeling the Strain

Residents in the Old Louisville neighborhood say they’ve already had to adjust. Craig Winstead, who lives near Kentucky Street and I-65, described the changes as a “big learning curve” since closures began in September 2025.

Local businesses are also navigating the disruptions.

Torre Ray, co-owner of Vintage Barber Company on South Brook Street, said his shop draws customers from across the city. While business has remained steady, street closures have made it harder for some clients to find convenient routes.

With the full I-65 shutdown approaching this summer, business owners are bracing for additional challenges but say they plan to stay open and adapt as needed.

What Drivers Should Expect

  • Overnight and early-morning construction activity

  • Long-term underpass closures

  • A full I-65 shutdown between I-264 and Muhammad Ali Boulevard in early summer

  • Increased detours and potential congestion across alternate routes

Officials recommend drivers monitor traffic updates and plan extra travel time once the summer closure begins.
