Louisville — Kentucky Derby-winning trainer Kenny McPeek added a new “Card” to his stable by naming a horse after a Louisville basketball standout.
McPeek introduced “Magical Mikel,” a colt named after Mikel Brown Jr., the freshman point guard making headlines on the court.
Brown became one of two Cardinals to score 30-plus points in a 118-77 win over NC State Wolfpack. He also matched Wes Unseld’s 59-year-old record by tallying 45 points against the Wolfpack.
Brown is widely projected to be a top selection in this year’s NBA Draft.
McPeek said Magical Mikel is currently training in Florida, though it remains unclear when the colt will compete.
Other Louisville players have also received the honor of having horses named after them. In 2012, former coach Rick Pitino named three of his horses after members of his 2012 Final Four team — “Russdiculous” for Russ Smith, “Gorgui” for Gorgui Deng and “Siva” for Peyton Siva.
