LOUISVILLE, Ky. (CNN Newsource/WLKY/WKRC) — A real-life “Lassie moment” unfolded in Kentucky after a neighborhood dog helped officers locate a missing 3-year-old boy.
The Louisville Metro Police Department shared video from the January 7 search, showing how the dog played a key role in guiding officers to the child.
Police said they were searching a neighborhood with the help of a drone and an air unit when an officer was unexpectedly approached by a dog.
“As I’m walking to the front, the craziest thing happened. There’s a dog,” Officer Josh Thompson told CBS News. “It would bark at me to tell me to hurry up. It led me all the way to the backyard. At that point I’m thinking, OK, this kid’s in the backyard.”
During the search, officers noticed an open back door at a home and briefly went inside to investigate. As they did, the dog began barking and led them back outside. The dog then guided officers to a vehicle where the missing boy was found locked inside.
Officers helped the child unlock the door, and he was safely reunited with his family.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen a happier kid in my life. He jumped out of the car, bear-hugged my neck, and wouldn’t let go,” Thompson said.
One officer at the scene said he did not know where the dog came from but described the animal as a “blessing from God.”
