(WOWK) — Slick travel conditions are expected Friday as the National Weather Service places much of the 13 News viewing area under a winter weather advisory. A winter storm warning is also in effect for Nicholas County and other high-elevation counties in West Virginia. Dozens of schools across the region have already announced delays or closures for Friday.
Snow advisories and warnings Friday into Saturday
Snow is expected to begin by late morning across Ohio and then spread into West Virginia. Kentucky is not expected to see much snow, but a mix of rain and snow could still make roads very slick. The slideshow below shows how the system is expected to move through the region.
Roads should remain mainly wet through the afternoon before freezing a couple of hours after sunset.
During the day, snow will mainly stick to grass and colder surfaces, while roads stay wet. This means there will be daytime accumulation, but major roads should remain wet. Back roads and already icy areas are likely to pick up new snow and become even slicker again.

Colder air will move in after the main band of snow, right as the evening commute begins. This will cause roads to start freezing over, as shown below.

By evening, elongated snow bands coming off the Great Lakes will move through the area. These bands can produce moderate snowfall in very narrow paths. If you encounter one, visibility could drop sharply, and road conditions may worsen quickly.

Snow is expected to taper off before Saturday morning. Most of Ohio and West Virginia should see general totals of 1 to 3 inches, with higher terrain potentially picking up 4 to 6 inches of new snow.
Forecast snowfall amounts as of 4 p.m. on Feb. 5, 2026
Temperatures will drop again on Saturday, so melting is unlikely. However, a warming trend is expected next week, bringing a significant thaw as temperatures climb into the 50s.
