On Tuesday, Feb. 4, the National Weather Service announced that a new winter storm is expected to bring light snow and strong winds across several states.

“Across the northern tier states, a series of Alberta clippers will move across the region, bringing only occasional light snow across the Great Lakes mainly today. A modest reinforcement of Arctic air will reach into the Great Lakes, but unusual warmth will develop across the northern High Plains, especially by Thursday, as a stronger clipper in Canada produces stronger downslope winds from the northern Rockies. Meanwhile, much of the western U.S. will remain mild and dry,” the NWS said.

Eight states preparing for snow

Alaska: The Dalton, Elliott, and Steese Highway summits are expected to see a light snowfall of one to three inches. Winds could reach up to 55 mph through Thursday morning.

Indiana: Several areas are forecast to receive one to two inches of snow on Tuesday. “A narrow band of snow producing moderate to heavy snowfall rates is expected. There remains uncertainty as to where this band may set up. A shift north or south may result in less or more snow than currently anticipated,” the NWS said.

Kentucky: East-central and north-central parts of the state are expected to see one to two inches of slushy, wet snow. “Be prepared for slippery roads. Slow down and use caution while driving. If you are going outside, watch your first few steps taken on stairs, sidewalks, and driveways. These surfaces could be icy and slippery, increasing your risk of a fall and injury,” the NWS warned.

Maryland: Western Garrett County could receive up to three inches of snow between noon and midnight, creating slick road conditions.

Michigan: After a season of heavy snowfall, Michigan is forecast to receive more, with up to four inches of lake-effect snow expected. “Travel could be very difficult in the heavier snow bands. The hazardous conditions will impact the Tuesday morning and evening commutes,” the National Weather Service said.

Pennsylvania: Snow totals of one to three inches are expected in cities including New Martinsville, Thomas, Kingwood, Bruceton Mills, Hazelton, Hendricks, Fairmont, Coopers Rock, Terra Alta, Canaan Valley, Parsons, Saint George, Davis, Morgantown, and Rowlesburg. The snow is expected to fall mainly during the afternoon and evening commute, with higher amounts possible in elevated areas of Preston and Tucker counties.

Ohio: Much of the state is bracing for up to three inches of snow, with hazardous travel conditions likely during the Tuesday evening commute.

West Virginia: Northern parts of the state could see up to four inches of snow, impacting travel throughout the week. “Slow down and use caution while traveling. The latest road conditions for your state can be obtained by calling 511 or accessing your state’s online traffic and roadway portal,” the NWS said.
