The Louisville metro area could see additional snowfall and bitterly cold temperatures on Jan. 24–25, potentially causing disruptions, according to the latest forecast from the National Weather Service in Louisville.

NWS Louisville meteorologist Brian Neudorff said forecasters have “high confidence” that a winter storm will affect Kentucky, bringing very cold Arctic air and accumulating snow. While a wintry mix that includes ice remains possible in some areas, temperatures are expected to stay cold enough to favor snow. Over the weekend, high temperatures in Louisville are forecast to range from 18 to 23 degrees, with lows around nine to 10 degrees. Wind chills could drop as low as negative 3 degrees on Jan. 24.

Neudorff said the overall chance of a wintry mix in the Louisville area is “extremely low” because of the cold conditions expected during the storm.

As of Jan. 20, NWS Louisville meteorologists are still uncertain about how much snow will fall and where the heaviest accumulations will occur. Neudorff said a winter storm watch or warning could be issued as the event gets closer and forecasts are updated.

The storm could bring “moderate impacts” to daily life, including closures, infrastructure disruptions, and hazardous driving conditions.

“Think about looking at a telescope or binoculars — you have to dial in the focus. That’s kind of what models do,” Neudorff said. “We’re basically trying to, as we get closer, dial in and see the picture. It’s less fuzzy. It becomes more clear.”

Neudorff encouraged residents to begin preparing now and continue monitoring weather updates.

The agency recommends keeping emergency supplies in homes and vehicles, checking smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and ensuring vehicles and heating sources have sufficient fuel. The day before the storm, residents should adjust plans as needed, have multiple ways to receive alerts, and bring pets indoors.

During the storm, NWS Louisville advises checking on neighbors and family, properly ventilating emergency heat sources, keeping generators at least 20 feet away from homes, and using caution while shoveling snow.
