LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Drivers using Interstate 64 in Shelby County should expect overnight closures starting Monday night as part of an ongoing construction project. Delays are likely, and motorists are encouraged to plan alternate routes.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet said I-64 West will be closed from 7 p.m. Monday to 7 a.m. Tuesday between mile points 35.3 and 34.9. Westbound traffic will detour at Exit 35 onto KY 53 before rejoining I-64.
I-64 East is scheduled to close from 7 p.m. Tuesday to 7 a.m. Wednesday between mile points 34.9 and 35.3. Eastbound drivers will use the same KY 53 detour at Exit 35, according to KYTC.
The closures will allow crews to demolish the KY 53 bridge over I-64. The bridge replacement is part of a $118 million widening and improvement project in Shelby County.
Construction began in February 2025 and is expected to wrap up by fall 2027. The project includes widening an 11-mile stretch of I-64, upgrading pavement, and rebuilding several bridges to improve traffic flow and capacity.
Work may be rescheduled due to weather or other delays. Drivers are encouraged to sign up for email alerts to receive weekly updates on traffic impacts related to the project.
