Video from the crash, provided to John Stevenson by Louisville Metro Police, shows the impact and the moments that followed.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — John Stevenson said he did everything he could to avoid the crash, even trying to jump off his motorcycle just before a car struck him. The hit-and-run happened at the intersection of 29th and Madison streets on a warm September night.
“It hit me and kept going,” Stevenson said.
Video from the crash shows Stevenson’s motorcycle stopped at a stop sign as he waited to turn right when a car drove straight toward him.
“I was right in the corner about to make my turn,” he said. “The car kept coming and just ran me over.”
The impact threw Stevenson off his bike and onto the side of the road. He said his quick reaction may have saved his life.
“Thank God I got the reflexes I got, (but it) still could’ve killed me,” Stevenson said. “I had to push myself off the bike when it hit me.”
Although there was no visible bleeding, Stevenson was injured. He managed to call 911 and then contacted his wife.
“I said ‘I can move a little bit,’” Stevenson said. “She was like ‘Do you need to go to the hospital?’ I said ‘I don’t know.’ I was just scared and sick. The next day, I said, you know what, I better go.”
At the hospital, doctors took X-rays and confirmed his injuries.
“My neck is messed up, and my leg is messed up,” he said. “This leg right here is messed up.”
The LMPD video shows the suspect’s vehicle clearly, but the license plate is difficult to read. Stevenson and his wife were only able to get part of the plate number.
“We ran to a car we think it was,” he said. “It had the same color markings from my bike on it.”
Stevenson said his motorcycle is insured and currently at a repair shop, but that is not enough. He wants the driver identified, cited and held accountable for leaving him injured in the street.
“I just want them caught,” he said.
Anyone with information about the vehicle or the driver is asked to contact Louisville Metro Police.
