LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Two Louisville Metro Police officers were seriously injured Friday evening when a vehicle crashed into them while they were assisting a stranded motorist.

LMPD spokesperson Aaron Ellis said the officers were responding to a stranded vehicle on Newburg Road at Abernathy Road around 10:15 p.m. Both were outside their marked patrol car with emergency lights on while checking on the motorist.

Police reported that another vehicle traveling south on Newburg Road rear-ended the officers’ vehicle. All three individuals—the two officers and the driver—were taken to UofL Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Authorities suspect the driver who struck the officers may have been intoxicated, though test results are still pending.
