Campbellsburg, Ky. — As Christmas and New Year’s celebrations near, the Kentucky State Police (KSP) Post 5 is urging motorists to prioritize safe and sober driving throughout the holiday season. Increased travel, winter weather, and holiday gatherings often lead to heavier traffic across the commonwealth and raise the risk of crashes.
To improve roadway safety, KSP Post 5 will take part in Operation C.A.R.E. (Crash Awareness Reduction Effort) from December 19 through January 1. This national traffic safety initiative, coordinated by the International Association of Chiefs of Police, works to reduce crashes through high-visibility patrols that target impaired, distracted, and aggressive driving behaviors.
KSP encourages drivers to follow these holiday travel safety reminders:
- Celebrate Responsibly: If alcohol or other impairing substances are part of your plans, arrange transportation ahead of time. A safe ride is always the best gift you can give yourself and others.
- Slow Down for Conditions: Winter weather, reduced daylight and holiday traffic can change driving conditions quickly. Adjust your speed and increase following distance.
- Stay Focused: Avoid distractions behind the wheel. Put phones away and remain alert, especially in high-traffic areas and late-night hours.
- Speak Up: If you encounter a driver who appears impaired or dangerous, contact your local KSP Post or law enforcement agency.
KSP reminds all motorists that safe driving decisions help ensure every seat at the table remains filled this holiday season. Through awareness, enforcement, and responsible choices, everyone can work together to make Kentucky’s roads safer from Christmas through New Year’s Day.
