LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – Cold air is settling in today as temperatures drop behind a passing front. That wintry feel will stick around into the work week as a winter system moves in Monday night into Tuesday. A mix of rain, snow, sleet, and freezing rain will impact different parts of the state and may create slick travel in some areas.

For Sunday, a cold front is moving through Kentucky with a few showers along and ahead of it. Skies may briefly clear in the afternoon, but clouds will return quickly in the evening. Temperatures fall throughout the day, starting in the 40s and 30s and ending around dinnertime in the 30s and 20s. Wind chills could dip into the teens at times.

Monday stays cold and mostly dry for much of the day, with highs stuck in the 30s and clouds increasing. By late afternoon and evening, attention shifts to the incoming wintry mix.

Snow, sleet, freezing rain, and rain will develop over southwestern Kentucky Monday afternoon and spread northeast Monday night. The northern edge of the system is expected to produce more significant wintry weather. Many areas in southern and eastern Kentucky will see mainly cold rain, but farther north and west, conditions will shift to sleet and eventually snow. Plan for a slower Tuesday morning as the system continues into the daytime.
