Summit County man sentenced to 10 years for drug and guns while out on parole

A man with a long criminal record has been sentenced to ten years in federal prison for drug trafficking and firearms violations committed while on parole, according to the Department of Justice.

Darron Portis, 36, of Akron, was sentenced to 120 months in prison and four years’ supervised release.

According to court records, Portis has previous felony convictions for aggravated robbery in 2008, abduction in 2012, burglary in 2015, and felon in possession of a handgun in 2021.

According to court documents, investigators from the DEA’s Cleveland District Office and the Akron Police Department focused on Portis during a narcotics trafficking investigation in Akron.

In January 2025, officers conducting a search warrant at Portis’ residence discovered him with a loaded Smith & Wesson. 38-caliber revolver and a bag of white powder that eventually tested positive for cocaine.

A lock box was discovered hidden in the home’s ducting, holding purple and white chemicals as well as a digital scale, according to prosecutors. Testing revealed that the purple material was a combination of tramadol, xylazine, fluoro fentanyl, and fentanyl, and the white substance was methamphetamine. Officers also recovered a 12-gauge shotgun and around $1,400 in cash from the property.
