KENTUCKY — A Russell County man is facing multiple charges after police say he attacked employees at a Papa John’s restaurant in Glasgow with a hammer.

The Glasgow Police Department responded Saturday evening to an assault report at the restaurant on Happy Valley Road. When officers arrived, they learned employees had been attacked and that the suspect, identified as 24-year-old Aaron Kelly of Russell Springs, was being restrained by workers at the scene.

According to a citation, investigators said Kelly entered the business through a back door and began assaulting employees with a hammer, injuring several workers.

Police said employees fought back and managed to subdue Kelly until officers arrived. During the struggle, one employee reportedly struck him.

Authorities said a woman also reported that Kelly approached her vehicle before the attack, asking for cigarettes and a gun. He then allegedly took a hammer from the vehicle, which officers later found in his possession.

Officers noted that Kelly appeared to be under the influence of a substance at the time.

After receiving medical clearance, police took Kelly into custody and transported him to the Barren County Detention Center. He faces charges of first-degree assault, public intoxication involving a controlled substance, and theft by unlawful taking from a vehicle.

The investigation is ongoing.
