Details from Louisville Metro Police and school officials appear to conflict with what is shown in the video.
Video shows a parent was buzzed into Central High before being detained at gunpoint, raising questions about JCPS’ account of the incident.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Body camera footage is raising questions about what led to a man’s arrest at gunpoint inside a Louisville high school earlier this month.
The March 4 incident triggered a brief lockdown at the school. However, details provided by Louisville Metro Police and school officials appear to conflict with what the video shows.
The footage captures a Jefferson County Public Schools police officer confronting 33-year-old Derrick Mosley just inside the school’s entrance shortly after 7:15 a.m. as students arrived.
“Let me see your hands, let me see your f****** hands, get on your belly, get on your belly,” the officer can be heard yelling.
Mosley is seen raising his hands as the officer draws a weapon. He then identifies himself as a Central High School parent.
Moments later, officers place him in handcuffs.
“Aye man, what the f*** are you doing here … it’s my daughter,” Mosley says.
Police search Mosley but do not find a weapon.
The video also shows how Mosley entered the building. JCPS said someone appeared to buzz him in. The doors locked behind him as he entered, and he raised his hand as the officer approached.
Before that, the officer is heard outside saying, “Aye my man, hey hey hey, don’t walk in that door.”
After taking Mosley into custody, the officer tells dispatch, “I got somebody in custody. He refused to exit the building and bypassed me and ran past me into the school,” according to the footage.
However, the video does not show Mosley running past the officer. Mosley also disputes that claim on camera.
“No I didn’t run in here, what are you talking about? You know I didn’t run in here,” he says.
According to Mosley’s arrest citation, officers responded to reports of a “suspicious male subject” outside the school who was “exhibiting unusual and concerning behavior.” Police wrote that Mosley “ignored the officers commands and abruptly fled, forcing his way through the front entrance and moving toward the schools interior security checkpoint.”
Officers said they treated the situation “as a potential active threat within a secured school environment” and drew their weapons because they “could not determine whether he was armed,” according to the citation.
In a letter to families, Central High School Principal Dr. Tamela Compton said the incident occurred “outside of our campus.” The letter stated that a “suspicious individual who attempted to gain entry into the building” was “apprehended and removed from campus.”
“Out of an abundance of caution, the campus was briefly placed on lockdown,” Compton wrote, adding that “at no time were students or staff harmed.”
However, the body camera video shows Mosley being held at gunpoint inside the school’s entryway — not outside the campus, as described in the letter.
WDRB asked JCPS about the discrepancy, but the district did not directly respond.
Mosley faces charges of criminal trespassing and disorderly conduct. According to online jail records, he has not yet been released from Louisville Metro Corrections and has pleaded not guilty.
JCPS said it is reviewing the school’s buzzer entry process following the incident.
