Severe storms may bring hail and strong winds to Louisville

LOUISVILLE — Showers and thunderstorms expected Sunday evening could bring severe hail and strong winds as cooler weather moves into the area, according to the National Weather Service in Louisville.

Forecasters placed parts of the metro area under a slight risk for severe storms, which could move through Louisville between 8 p.m. March 22 and 2 a.m. March 23. The storms are developing along a cold front and may be strongest north of the Interstate 64 corridor.

Jefferson, Oldham, and most of Shelby County in Kentucky are included in the slight risk zone, along with Clark and Floyd counties in Indiana.

Louisville faces an estimated 15% to 29% chance of severe winds and hail, based on National Weather Service maps issued March 22. Southerly winds between 10 and 20 mph, with gusts up to 30 mph, are also expected. Temperatures are forecast to drop sharply from a high near 87 on March 22 to the low 60s by March 23.

March 25: Mostly cloudy, high near 69, with a 20–30% chance of afternoon and overnight showers, low around 57

March 26: 30% chance of daytime showers and storms, otherwise mostly sunny with a high near 81; 50% chance of storms overnight, low around 45

March 27: 50% chance of showers during the day and 20% at night, cloudy with a high near 53 and a low near 33
