LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) — With fewer than 100 days remaining before a major shutdown of Interstate 65, officials have announced new downtown traffic changes as preparations continue for the I-65 Central Corridor Project.

The project will shut down a five-mile stretch of I-65 between Jefferson Street and Interstate 264 from June through July to allow for improvement work.

Crews will begin ramp work and lane closures this week to prepare for upcoming traffic shifts. Contractors will install barrier walls, apply temporary striping and complete new foundation work.

Lane Reductions Begin Feb. 24

Starting Tuesday, Feb. 24, I-65 South will be reduced from three lanes to one just south of the I-64/I-65/I-71 interchange — commonly known as “Spaghetti Junction.” The closure will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday and last until 6 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25.

After that, the roadway will reopen to two lanes during daytime hours through Wednesday, March 25.

Nighttime Lane Closures Continue

Beginning Wednesday, Feb. 25, I-65 South will be reduced from two lanes to one during nighttime hours just south of Spaghetti Junction. These nightly closures will run from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following morning through March 25.

Ramp Closures

The I-65 South off-ramp to East St. Catherine Street (Exit 135) will close at midnight Wednesday, Feb. 25, and remain closed until March 25.

In addition, the I-65 South on-ramp from South First Street near East Jacob Street will close at midnight Feb. 25 and reopen March 25.

Drivers should expect delays and consider alternate routes as work progresses ahead of the summer corridor shutdown.
