LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A major road construction project in Louisville is set to begin in the coming months, with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet planning to close Interstate 65 between I-264 and Jefferson Street for roughly two months to repair three bridges. The stretch sees about 125,000 drivers daily, including many heading downtown for conventions and events.
For local workers like Freddy Silva, a DoorDash driver, the closure will be challenging. “If that’s going to be closed for two months, it is going to be a little bit hard for me but what can I do,” Silva said, noting that the area near the Kentucky Expo Center is one of his busiest zones.
Tourism officials are already preparing for the impact. Rosanne Mastin with Louisville Tourism said about 40 groups have been notified to help them communicate potential traffic disruptions to attendees. This includes visitors for events like the Run 4 Roses basketball tournament.
Hotels near the construction zone are also planning adjustments. Greg Mann, General Manager of the Crowne Plaza, said, “As we get closer to that June and July, there might be some adjustments that we have to make for some of our clients and guests.”
Despite the planned closure, no events have canceled so far, with officials noting that summer is typically a slower period for conventions.
The exact start date for the I-65 closure has not yet been announced.
