LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Flu activity is on the rise in Louisville, with nearly 940 cases reported since the end of September, according to the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness.

The department’s Influenza Surveillance Dashboard shows a steady increase in cases, with six outbreaks reported in schools, childcare centers, or long-term care facilities.

Flu can spread rapidly, and certain groups are at higher risk for severe illness, including infants and young children, adults 65 and older, and people with weakened immune systems.

Health officials recommend several measures to protect yourself and others:

  • Avoid close contact with sick individuals.

  • Wash hands frequently with soap and warm water.

  • Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.

  • Wear a mask in public or crowded spaces, especially if at higher risk.

  • Stay home when sick to prevent spreading the flu.

  • Get an annual flu shot.

Last season, Louisville reported more than 20,000 flu cases and 36 flu-related deaths between September and May, with one of the largest spikes occurring in December.

Health officials note that the earlier you get a flu shot, the better. It takes 10–14 days for the immune system to build protective antibodies against influenza.
