Kentucky State Police are warning drivers that black ice could return to roadways Tuesday night.

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WEVV) — Roads have cleared after last night’s snowfall, but with temperatures dropping again tonight, they are expected to refreeze and make driving more difficult.

“The first place you’ll always see freeze over first… Audubon Parkway, the Twin Bridges, as well as the 60 Bypass in Owensboro, and it held true today,” said Kentucky State Trooper Corey King.

King urged drivers not to assume melting snow and the lack of visible ice mean the roads are safe, noting that any remaining water will freeze again tonight.

“Our K DOT friends have done a really good job of laying down that brine beforehand, it has worked but with a little bit of that sun popping out and that thermal melt you’ll see a little bit of that water freeze over again tonight,” King said.

He stressed the importance of checking road conditions before heading out, both when leaving and returning home. “If you go to our state’s website at goky.ky.gov you can see in real time what the issues are with every road in the state,” King said.

For those who need to travel tonight or Thursday morning, King warned that speed remains the leading cause of crashes. “The number one factor in wrecks when it comes down to… whether it’s summertime, fall, or winter is speed. Speed is the number one factor in wrecks… slow down,” he said.

King explained that black ice is difficult to spot and said that if drivers notice a glossy sheen on the pavement at night, it could be slick black ice. He also advised drivers to stay in their vehicles if problems arise, as wintry conditions can make people on the roadside hard to see.

Trooper King told 44News that having tires with decent tread is the most important step to staying safe on black ice. “It’s literally the only thing sticking you to the road,” he said.
