LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) Superintendent Brian Yearwood said Tuesday that layoffs remain a possibility as the district faces the challenge of cutting $132 million in spending by next fall.
During a morning news conference, Yearwood emphasized that while the district is reviewing several cost-saving options, including a hiring freeze, school programs will remain largely unaffected.
“As far as school programs, we will maintain the quality programs in our schools – those will not be cut,” Yearwood said. “We have zero plans to cut programs that are working, programs where we see our students thriving. That is not happening.”
Although Yearwood initially stated that “the district is not laying anyone off,” he later clarified that layoffs have not been ruled out.
“Our first step in staffing adjustments will be to reorganize to make sure we are working efficiently,” he explained in a follow-up statement. “While we do not have a finalized plan or budget to share at this time, layoffs are not off the table.”
The superintendent has previously said that any spending cuts would begin within the district’s central office.
When asked if that could mean layoffs in administrative positions, JCPS Board of Education Chairman Corrie Shull told WHAS11 that while he could not confirm potential job cuts, “there certainly will be some organizational chart changes.”
Yearwood’s finalized budget proposal is expected to be presented in January 2026.
