JEFFERSONTOWN, Ky. — Traffic in Jeffersontown is disrupted after a section of Plantside Drive collapsed.
Jeffersontown Public Works reported that the road between Bunsen Way and Caton Drive gave way on Tuesday, likely due to a collapsed pipe following heavy rains that caused flooding. The city recorded about five inches of rain.
Public works officials said flooding began around 1:30 p.m., and the road collapsed by 4 p.m.
“It’s like the major cloud just hovered over Louisville and Jeffersontown itself. We had substantial flooding here in this area,” said Public Works Director Jimmy Franconia. “We’re very blessed that a car didn’t happen to be going across it.”
Officials confirmed that both sides of Plantside Drive near the collapsed section remain open, and no businesses have been affected or rendered inaccessible.
“Plantside Drive is one of our main arteries in our industrial park,” Franconia said. “We have our roadway signage up, and we’re communicating with businesses. They will be able to operate normally. It is 100% accessible.”
The city has declared an emergency and plans to hold a meeting Wednesday morning with contractors to speed up cleanup and reopen the road as soon as possible.
“Can we use the pipe again? We don’t know, because the weight of the material in the roadway that collapsed on top of it—it’s corrugated steel—may have damaged the pipe. We won’t know until we open it back up and assess,” Franconia added.
It remains unclear when the roadway will reopen.
