Bourbon County is one of nine Kentucky counties taking part in the “High Five” program to improve driver safety.
LEXINGTON, Ky. — Out of Kentucky’s 120 counties, Bourbon County ranked 14th for the highest number of fatalities and serious injuries on the road. That prompted local leaders to join the “High Five” initiative aimed at increasing seatbelt use.
“Kentucky’s ‘High Five’ program will be most successful if residents of these counties, and all counties in Kentucky, work with local troopers and deputies and simply buckle up,” said Scott Langle, Captain of the Kentucky State Police (KSP).
‘High Five’ Program Shows Results
The year-long program began two years ago, with state police officers and the sheriff’s department focusing on raising seatbelt usage on local roads.
Data indicates the program has been effective.
“In the past two years, we’ve measured success, and seatbelt usage ranged from the high 70% range up to nearly 90%. There’s still room for improvement, especially among those least likely to wear protection, such as pickup truck occupants,” said Kim Elliott, High Five Analyst.
Program Promotes Safety, Not Penalties
Judge-Executive Michael Williams emphasized that the initiative is about saving lives, not penalizing residents.
“It’s to save lives, not to collect money or fees from people. It’s not meant to aggravate anyone through law enforcement. The intent is to save lives,” Williams said.
Both KSP and the Bourbon County Sheriff’s Department received $10,000 each to continue the program, with the goal of reducing injuries and violations in the county.
“Wearing a seatbelt can save your life. It is important that we all arrive home to our families safely,” said Cody Asbury, Bourbon County Sheriff.
Bourbon County has already seen progress. In 2023, the county ranked ninth, moving up five spots over two years.
