Salem teen detained after striking victim with handgun and running from officers, police say

A Salem teenager was detained Thursday afternoon after reportedly assaulting someone with a handgun and attempting to flee police, authorities announced.

Around 2:30 p.m., Salem police rushed to the vicinity of Church St. SE and Bellevue St. SE after receiving a report that a male grabbed a black revolver from a satchel and struck another person in the head with it.

According to the Salem Police Department, the teen ran away from officers after they attempted to reach him.

After a foot pursuit, officers apprehended the teen at Pringle Creek with the assistance of a police K-9, according to authorities, who also discovered the bag with the weapon nearby.

The kid, who has not been publicly identified, was arrested at the Marion County Juvenile Center on many charges, including unauthorized possession of a firearm, unlawful use of a weapon, interference with a police officer, and third-degree escape. Authorities stated that these allegations are related to activities that officers witnessed following the initial event.

It is unclear what led to the alleged assault.

As of Friday morning, the Salem Police Department had not identified the victim of the claimed assault. Anyone with information on the victim’s identify should contact Salem police.

The investigation is underway.
