Two men charged with hate crimes in unrelated incidents, one in Portage Park and the other in Uptown, were sentenced to probation after pleading guilty last week. In one of the cases, prosecutors dismissed the hate crime charge as part of a plea bargain.
Andres Stathoulopoulos, 21, of the Northwest Side, was sentenced by Judge Michael Hood to 429 days in prison and two years of mental health probation after pleading guilty to hate crime and aggravated violence. His 429-day sentence will be completed by the time he has already served in jail and under electronic monitoring.
The victims, a 42-year-old White lady and a 39-year-old Black man, were parked in front of Stathoulopoulos’ residence in the 5700 block of West Addison Street late on July 8, 2025. Stathoulopoulos yelled racial slurs at the man and branded the woman a “n— lover,” according to a detention petition.
Stathoulopoulos crossed the street and threatened the woman, who yelled back and ordered him to leave, according to the petition. As he approached, the male victim observed Stathoulopoulos brandishing a tiny knife and cautioned her. Stathoulopoulos allegedly sliced the victim on the top of her wrist before leaving.
In the hospital, the woman received four sutures. Surveillance footage allegedly captured Stathoulopoulos approaching the victims and walking away with the knife in his hand. Prosecutors say Chicago and Schiller Park police officers identified him in the footage.
In the other instance, an Uptown man pled guilty to residential burglary and was sentenced to two years probation by Judge Shelley Sutker-Dermer. Prosecutors dismissed many other felony allegations, including hate crime and aggravated violence on a minor, according to court records.
The incident began about 4 a.m. on February 17, 2024, when a 27-year-old man went home from work to his residence in the 1200 block of West Sunnyside, where his wife, two small sons, and sister were sleeping. According to authorities, Talbott, 39 at the time and a resident of the same apartment, began beating on the family’s door and screamed. The man, his wife, and their children went to the back of the apartment, while his sister locked herself in her bedroom.
Prosecutors claimed Talbott eventually burst through the front door, destroying a hinge and moving toward the family. The man and his 5-year-old son escaped through the rear door and descended to the second story. His wife, carrying their 6-month-old boy, trailed a few steps behind. Prosecutors claim she tumbled down the steps with the infant, who sustained bruising on his face.
The hate crime accusations came from allegations that Talbott made disparaging remarks against Spanish-speakers and immigrants while yelling and pounding on the door, prosecutors said.
