Multiple children and adults were injured when a school bus crashed on Interstate 465 after colliding with an Indiana State Police pickup truck.
The crash happened around 10 a.m., just north of Washington Street on the city’s east side.
Photographs from INDOT cameras show the overturned yellow school bus blocking many left lanes.
According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, the school bus involved in the crash came from Warren Township.
According to a message provided to parents by Warren Township, the bus was carrying 25 fifth-graders from Creston Intermediate Middle School as well as three adults when it crashed. Indiana State Police later noted that the bus carried 24 students.
According to state police, three adults and eight children on the school bus were taken to surrounding hospitals with injuries. According to the Indianapolis Fire Department, seven children’s injuries were classified as “slight,” with one youngster suffering a critical injury.
The remaining students were taken to a hospital to be checked out and reunited with their families.
According to state police, the accident between the bus and the ISP truck caused the school bus to roll onto its side and stop on a concrete barrier.
According to state police, the collision also included a blue Honda minivan. Police claimed the van was passing the bus, and the bus “made an evasive maneuver” after the van cleared the bus, causing it to collide with the ISP truck. However, authorities said they don’t believe the van collided with the bus.
The pickup sustained significant front-end damage. Two on-duty state troopers were inside the pickup vehicle and were hurt in the collision. According to the IFD, all five persons hurt, including the troopers, sustained “slight” injuries.
State police said they want to speak with the driver of the blue minivan.

The ISP first stated that numerous left lanes on the northbound side had been closed, resulting in a major backup and traffic delays. Southbound traffic likewise saw closures and delays. Around 1:22 p.m., state police said that all lanes had reopened after crews cleaned up the crash scene.
State police have requested the students’ parents and family members not to approach the crash scene.
“All students have been transported away from the scene and are not here,” said ISP Sgt. John Perrine.
“It will take us a bit to sort this out but all students are accounted for and have been transported to local hospitals out of an abundance of caution,” he said.
