A Central Florida man was taken into custody after his dog died from being left outside in excessive heat.
Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to an apartment on Palm Crossing Drive in Tampa after a concerned citizen reported that a Cane Corso had been left in a box outside for several hours without food or water in near-100-degree heat.
When Hillsborough County Sheriff’s deputies arrived, the dog was severely lethargic and suffering from severe heat stress.
The dog was sent for emergency care but died later.
During the investigation, the owner, 44-year-old Harvey Leroy Jones, acknowledged to leaving the dog outside because it caused problems inside the house, according to local police.
The defendant was detained and charged with aggravated cruelty to animals.
“This tragic case is a stark reminder that extreme heat can kill pets in a matter of hours.” During hot weather, never leave animals outside without enough shade, fresh water, and supervision, since this can be fatal,” the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office states.
