A missing 70-year-old man with dementia from Missouri was located after a police chase on Interstate 70 in Hancock County early Monday morning.
According to a statement from the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, IMPD contacted the Hancock County 911 Center that police were on their way to find a missing 70-year-old Missouri man in Indianapolis approximately 4 a.m. on July 20.
According to the sheriff’s office, IMPD informed OnStar that the missing man’s vehicle was approaching the county line, and officers suspected he might leave Marion County before they could find him.
According to the sheriff’s office, the man has medical difficulties, such as recent head surgery and dementia.
The vehicle was eventually discovered in Hancock County on 300 North, with the missing person driving.
Deputies attempted to stop the vehicle, and the driver originally halted but then drove away. The elderly man’s automobile entered I-70 eastbound towards Ohio. Deputies proceeded to try to halt the vehicle. Other agencies, including the Greenfield Police Department, Henry County Sheriff’s Office, Indiana State Police, and Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, assisted and provided tire deflation devices as the vehicle continued across Hancock, Henry, and Wayne counties, according to a statement from the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office stated that the car never exceeded 80 mph.
Deputies were able to deflate many tires before the car became trapped in the median grass along I-70 east of State Road 1 near Jackson.
According to the sheriff’s office, the 70-year-old man has been identified as the missing person and is driving alone.
Although no injuries were recorded, the man was taken into jail and sent to a local hospital for medical treatment. Wayne County officials also towed his vehicle.
According to the sheriff’s office, OnStar contacted the man’s wife on the event. Because of the old male’s physical conditions that contributed to his driving behavior, he is unlikely to face any criminal charges in Hancock County. We are not revealing his identity at this time due to the medical nature of the occurrence,” according to a statement from the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office.
