Man apprehended in Van Buren Township after police standoff

A man has surrendered following a multi-hour confrontation with police in Van Buren Township, near Belleville.

It all began at 4 p.m. on Monday, when Canton police were dispatched to a reported driver armed with a gun who was on his way into the city, allegedly with the intent to hurt himself or others. While attempting to halt the man’s vehicle, police pursued him until they arrived at the 6000 block of Sandalwood in Van Buren Township.

According to police, the suspect ran into the home and barricaded himself inside with two family members.

FOX 2 arrived on the site and discovered many agencies in the area, with a concentrate on a residence on Denton Road off of Ashbury Drive.

Officials said that after an hour, Canton’s Crisis Negotiation Team persuaded the suspect to release the family members. Later, the standoff ended peacefully when the man surrendered to authorities at 8 p.m., four hours after the initial report.

Both family members were unhurt. Meanwhile, the suspect was transported to a hospital for evaluation.
