Villager taken into custody after allegedly skip-scanning $38 worth of ribeyes at Walmart

A villager was taken into custody for allegedly skipping nearly $40 in ribeye steaks at the Walmart at Sarasota Plaza in The Villages.

Sherri Ann Cohen, 72, of the Village of Osceola Hills, was arrested Sunday afternoon when a loss prevention officer noticed her in the store’s self-checkout lines. According to an arrest complaint from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, Cohen put a $38.74 ribeye steak on top of other steaks, scanning just the bottom one.

Surveillance video also captured Cohen pretending to scan a bottle of Tide laundry detergent and a 32-pack of Aquafina water. Furthermore, she chose the quantity of two lemons on the screen rather than the three she had.

In total, Cohen allegedly attempted to steal $59.86 in items. She passed through every point of sale and exited the store before being halted.

A criminal background check indicated that the Brooklyn, New York native had no previous theft convictions. Cohen was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of second-degree petty theft and lodged into the Sumter County Detention Center. She was released after paying a $500 bond.
