Four people were arrested, including three teenagers, after the fatal shooting of an 18-year-old at a Southside park last month, authorities announced.
On July 16, Jacksonville officers from District 3 Patrol responded to reports of gunfire at Drew Park off Barnes Road.
When police arrived, they discovered Marvin Oporta Garcia, 18, bleeding from several gunshot wounds. Garcia died of his injuries on the scene before emergency workers could help him. Garcia was legally admitted to the United States as a refugee, according to officials.
Detectives from the Homicide Unit initiated an investigation and identified four suspects in the killing: Jose Hernandez Bermudez (16), Kleber Martinez (17), Daniel Ramirez Mato (18), and Russell Oliva Reyes (21).
Investigators believe all four suspects were in the country illegally. Hernandez Bermudez is from Nicaragua, Martinez and Oliva Reyes are from Honduras, and Ramirez Mato comes from Cuba.
Police arrested Hernandez Bermudez, Martinez, and Ramirez Mato on Saturday, August 15. Officers detained Oliva Reyes the next day. All four were booked into the Duval County Jail, and local investigators informed federal officials about the situation.
“We will continue to work to find justice for Oporta Garcia,” the agency stated in a statement, adding that their thoughts are with the victim’s family.
