The suspect in a hit-and-run that seriously injured the driver of a moped in La Jolla on Sunday has been taken into custody, according to police.
According to the San Diego Police Department, the suspect was driving a black Nissan Rogue eastbound on Nautilus Street when he failed to stop at a red light at the junction with La Jolla Boulevard.
The suspect then hit a man riding a Vespa moped as he entered the intersection and fled the scene.
The 71-year-old victim’s injuries included a shattered pelvis, internal hemorrhage, a brain bleed, and multiple rib fractures.
Several neighbors and witnesses were present when the incident occurred. Police said one witness supplied a snapshot of the suspect’s vehicle, which was later used to locate him using an automated license plate reader in the vicinity.
Officers discovered that the license plate was registered to a residence near the collision scene and apprehended the 34-year-old suspect about 7:35 a.m. Monday. He was arrested for felony hit-and-run, and his vehicle was impounded as evidence.
Police said it’s unclear whether drugs or alcohol played a part in the crash.
