A suspect in the tragic bank shooting that killed two people in Berea is now in custody.
Braelin Weaver, 18, was detained on Friday morning, according to Kentucky State Police Trooper Justin Kearny.
According to a federal criminal document, Weaver is accused of committing an armed robbery on Thursday at the U.S. Bank branch on Chestnut Street.
Investigators said he entered the bank at 2 p.m. and shot and murdered a man and a bank teller before rummaging through the drawers and leaving.
After that, authorities allegedly tracked Weaver down in a silver BMW, which they eventually connected to him through social media posts.
Officials then obtained information regarding Weaver’s whereabouts, which put him in Somerset. They traced him down near I-75 when a high-speed chase began.
The chase reached speeds of more than 100 mph and proceeded into Lexington, where Weaver allegedly reached 130 mph.
Police say he then crashed the BMW and fled. Police say they discovered a gun inside the crashed BMW.
Weaver is facing many federal accusations, including armed bank robbery, using/discharging a handgun in a violent felony, and causing death with a firearm during the incident.
If convicted, those charges may result in a maximum of life in prison or even the death sentence.
It’s unclear when Weaver will make his first court appearance.
