Louisville unveils new master plan for Jefferson Memorial Forest
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — City leaders unveiled a new master plan for Jefferson Memorial Forest on Friday, outlining major upgrades and expanded recreation options.
Mayor Craig Greenberg, Councilman Dan Seum (D13), Councilwoman Crystal Bast (D14), and Louisville Parks and Recreation officials announced the plan at the park.
“This master plan gives us a clear path forward for Jefferson Memorial Forest,” Greenberg said. “These plans and investments will expand access to amazing recreation activities while protecting the natural environment that makes the forest such a special part of our community.”
City officials said the forest has grown in popularity, with camping and hiking increasing by more than 20% each year.
The plan includes a new access point in southwest Louisville, a welcome center, a canopy walk with suspension bridges, expanded mountain biking trails, a glamping area, and a playground.
It also calls for development of the Moreman Hill area, including a future segment of the Louisville Loop. The plan incorporates accessibility improvements, including an ADA-accessible tree canopy walk.
Officials said extensive public input shaped the plan, with feedback from more than 2,400 community members and stakeholders.
“Developing this master plan meant listening to many different perspectives—from the neighbors who experience Jefferson Memorial Forest every day to residents across the county who shared what would encourage them to visit or what has kept them away,” said Michelle King, executive director of Louisville Parks and Recreation. “Both viewpoints are essential as we work to make the forest welcoming, accessible, and meaningful for the entire community.”
