LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Two men are facing trafficking charges after authorities seized nearly $900,000 worth of methamphetamine during a traffic stop in Shelby County.
According to the Jeffersontown Police Department, the case was part of a joint narcotics investigation involving local and federal agencies. On March 30, deputies with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office stopped a semi tractor-trailer in Shelbyville.
During the stop, investigators discovered multiple suitcases containing about 100 pounds of suspected crystal methamphetamine.
Authorities arrested Alfonso Garcia Ruiz and Edgar Omar Sotelo Valdez, both from Tijuana, Mexico. Each has been charged with first-degree trafficking of a controlled substance.
Police believe the drugs were intended for distribution in the Louisville area.
Officials said the seizure resulted from a coordinated effort involving Jeffersontown police, the DEA, IRS-Criminal Investigations, and Appalachia HIDTA.
“This was not a chance encounter. It was the result of deliberate coordination and focused investigative work aimed at disrupting the movement of significant quantities of narcotics,” Jeffersontown Police Chief Richard Sanders said in a statement.
Garcia and Sotelo were arraigned Tuesday, and their next court appearance is scheduled for April 9.
