A woman from Indianapolis was sentenced to ten years in prison for shooting at a repairman who was working on her dryer.
Reba Wilson was sentenced by a Marion County judge after pleading guilty to criminal confinement while armed with a deadly weapon and intimidating behavior. Three additional charges were dropped as part of a plea agreement: unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, and pointing a firearm at another.
Nate Baird, a self-employed repair technician, went to Wilson’s east side home on Payton Avenue, near 10th Street and North Shortridge Road, in March 2024 to repair a clothes dryer with a heat problem.
According to Baird, Wilson declined to pay the $70 service price after being identified with the problem, citing her dryer’s warranty. She said, ‘I don’t want to pay that. I replied, ‘Well, I don’t work for free. So I went to leave, and she pointed a gun at me right in front of her house, forcing me to stay and saying, ‘You’re going to fix my dryer,'” Baird explained.
Baird claimed he pretended to reassemble the dryer before fleeing through the rear door. Baird claims he never looked back while running around the house, but he heard one shot and Wilson yell, “I’ll pop a cap in your a**!”
Baird fled in his truck and called police, who apprehended Wilson at the house.
Police said they discovered a single shell casing in plain sight on top of a dryer door in the kitchen, as well as a gun hidden beneath a couch.
During the sentencing hearing on Monday, July 20, Wilson stated that she suffers from multiple sclerosis and requested home detention to receive the necessary care.
However, the judge deemed Wilson “unworthy” of community corrections, citing her eight prior convictions and being on the run in this instance with a warrant for nearly a year.
