LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Police are warning drivers to stay alert as car break-ins continue to increase across Louisville neighborhoods.
Thieves are moving from one area to another, targeting unlocked vehicles and searching for valuable items inside.
“We’ve seen a lot of break-ins across the entire Metro area for several months,” said Eddie Jones, assistant chief of the St. Matthews Police Department. “The challenge is that multiple groups are involved, so even after one group leaves, another may strike soon after.”
St. Matthews police reported about 80 car break-ins in just the first three months of the year.
“Obviously, no one likes hearing about that happening nearby,” said resident Taylor Thomas.
Police say subdivisions and apartment complexes are common targets, with suspects often checking every vehicle to see if it’s unlocked.
According to Louisville Metro Police, car thefts dropped by 18% in 2025, but thefts from vehicles increased by 11%.
“We’re working with Metro police to identify suspects and gather information so we can make arrests,” Jones said.
To combat the trend, St. Matthews officers are increasing patrols in frequently targeted areas.
“Just having a visible police presence can help deter them, even if it’s only for the night,” Jones said.
Police say the suspects are often teenagers or young adults looking for items like firearms, electronics, or other valuables.
“I try not to keep anything too valuable in my car, but that’s not always possible,” Thomas said. “I’m a musician, so sometimes I leave my guitar in there.”
She said she plans to be more cautious moving forward.
“Keep your car locked, park in a garage if you can, and be aware of your surroundings,” Thomas said.
Jones echoed that advice, urging drivers to take simple precautions.
“Do your best not to make yourself a target,” he said.
Police also recommend avoiding leaving garage door openers inside vehicles parked outside and choosing well-lit areas when parking.
