A night out in Louisville, Kentucky, turned violent after a misunderstanding during a photo moment, highlighting how casual remarks can escalate in public settings.

The Louisville Police Department arrested two individuals in connection with the March 8, 2025, incident at Paddock Shops, a popular outdoor shopping center in the city’s east end.

According to Law & Crime, 19-year-old Malakhi Scott Weathers-Parker faces charges of first-degree strangulation, fourth-degree assault, and unlawful transaction with a minor. Seth Jones, 20, is charged with two counts of assault and one count of unlawful transaction with a minor. The altercation began when three people heading to Malone’s made a casual remark — “Say cheese” — toward another group taking photos.

Although the comment appeared harmless, the second group reportedly took offense.

Police said Weathers-Parker and Jones were among those upset. After initially leaving, they returned to the parking lot with a juvenile and searched for the individuals involved at multiple locations nearby.

The situation escalated when the groups encountered each other again in the parking lot. Authorities said a fight quickly broke out, during which one victim was beaten with their own metal baton and suffered injuries.

Another victim was placed in a chokehold, lost consciousness, and sustained a skull fracture and brain bleeding. The suspects then fled the scene. Investigators later used CCTV footage to identify and track them down.

According to WDRB, Jones was arrested on March 18, 2025. His attorney later claimed he acted in self-defense, alleging the other group displayed a weapon.

Following the incident, an injured woman filed a lawsuit against Paddock Shops, claiming negligence and inadequate safety measures. The lawsuit alleges poor lighting and insufficient surveillance contributed to the attack.

“[S]he was ambushed in a dark parking lot,” attorney David Barber said in a press release.

“The Paddock Shops had no surveillance cameras covering the parking lots, inadequate lighting, and a security response slower than nearby restaurant employees and bystanders. This attack was foreseeable and preventable.”

A few days later, police arrested Weathers-Parker on March 24 after asking for public assistance in locating him through a social media post referencing the “say cheese” comment.

“We are alleging that he and some of his friends thought it would be cool to be ‘cheese heads’ and assault and strangle a patron outside of a popular east end eatery on 3-8-25 during the evening hours. If you know where Mr. Pepper Jack is, or you feel ‘cheesy’ enough to call in a tip, remember you can do it anonymously,” police said.

Weathers-Parker is being held on a $50,000 cash bond and would be subject to home incarceration if released. The court also issued a no-contact order preventing him from contacting the victims, co-defendants, or visiting Paddock Shops, Malone’s, and Harry’s.

He is also prohibited from possessing any weapons. His next court hearing is scheduled for April 2, 2026.
