FRANKFORT, Ky. — A bill requiring schools to expel students who intentionally harm staff is moving forward in Kentucky’s legislature.

Senate Bill 101 would mandate that students in grades 6 through 12 be expelled for at least one year if they physically injure a teacher at school or during a school-related event.

Officials report about 5,000 assaults against educators each year in Kentucky.

The bill passed out of committee with a 14-1 vote.

It now heads to the full Senate for further consideration.
