A 9-year-old girl who had been reported missing in Northern Kentucky was found dead Saturday evening after an extensive search lasting more than 24 hours.
According to the Boone County Sheriff’s Office, the body of Jenny Dim was discovered in a pond near her home around 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
Authorities said Jenny was last seen around 5:30 p.m. Friday walking on Macintosh Lane in Florence, Kentucky, heading toward Afton Drive. Her disappearance prompted a large-scale search across the region.
Police said Jenny was wearing a mint-colored jacket and pink headphones and was not wearing shoes when she was last seen. Officials described her as about 4 feet 4 inches tall and weighing approximately 53 pounds.
Investigators also said the child was nonverbal, which increased concern during the search.
Community and Agencies Joined the Search
Law enforcement officers and volunteers searched through Friday night and most of Saturday. Officials asked neighbors to check their properties and review security camera footage for any signs of the missing child.
“We are going to be relying on the people who not only know the community but they know their own lay of the land,” Sgt. Anthony Theetge of the Boone County Sheriff’s Office said during the search.
He urged residents to check vehicles, sheds, decks and other small spaces where a child might seek shelter.
Ian Alert Issued
An Ian Alert had been issued for Jenny earlier in the search. The alert system is used in Kentucky for missing children who have autism or other developmental disabilities.
Dozens of local, state and federal law enforcement agencies assisted with the search effort across Northern Kentucky.
Authorities say the circumstances surrounding the child’s death remain under investigation.
