Bodycam footage from the Flint Township Police Department shows the inside of Krystal Farmer’s home in Flint, Mich.
A Michigan mother was arrested after police said she left her two special-needs children alone for several days.
Krystal Farmer, 35, faces two counts of child abandonment, four counts of child abuse, and one count of lying to police after officers said they found her two special-needs children alone in their Flint, Michigan, home on Feb. 18. In a Facebook post, the Flint Township Police Department said the house was filled with trash, the walls were smeared with human waste, and one of the young boys was eating “raw, spoiled meat.” The other boy was hiding on a bedroom floor.
According to police, a concerned neighbor called 911 to request a welfare check at the home. Local CBS affiliate WNEM-TV spoke with neighbor Christy Ogles-Campbell, who said she suspected something had been wrong at the home “at least since September.” After learning about the condition of the house and the children, she said, “I never ever could have imagined that that was actually what was going on in that house.”
Police said Farmer lied during questioning, but investigators dismantled her alleged story and determined she had left the boys home alone for days. Body camera footage released by the department captured the moments officers found the children — one naked and the other covered in feces. No adults were inside the home.
While searching the residence, officers reported that trash covered the floor “so thickly” they “couldn’t take a normal step.” A faucet had been left running, causing water to overflow onto the floor. Police said, “It was a house that had been reduced to survival conditions.”
In their Facebook post, Flint police said the boys are “now safe” because one neighbor “spoke up.”
Online court records show a bond order was issued Monday, but details about Farmer’s bond amount or custody status were not available.
