Louisville — An attorney representing the family of a woman who died after coming into contact with a Louisville garbage truck has identified the victim.

In a statement Monday, attorney Stephanie Rivas said the woman was Tyrah Adams, 35.

Crews with Louisville Metro Public Works were conducting routine alley cleanup Thursday morning when they found Adams in the 2500 block of Cedar Street.

Louisville Metro Police said Adams later died at the hospital from injuries she suffered after coming into “contact with equipment” on a garbage truck.

Rivas said Adams was a houseless individual who was known to stay in the alley where crews found her.

The attorney said the family’s team inspected the truck Monday but still has limited information about what happened.

Although the investigation remains in its early stages, Rivas said the city’s actions are “very questionable and concerning.”

Louisville Metro Public Works released a statement Saturday expressing sadness over the incident. The department said its Solid Waste Management team was performing routine alley cleanup in the 2500 block of Cedar Street when the incident occurred. Officials noted that crews complete this type of work hundreds of times each day as part of normal operations. In line with standard procedure, the city placed the employees involved on administrative leave pending the investigation’s outcome.

LMPD’s Public Integrity Unit is leading the ongoing investigation.
