A frozen tater tot recall tied to possible plastic contamination has grown to more than half a million pounds of product distributed across 28 states.

CINCINNATI (WKRC) – A frozen tater tot recall connected to potential plastic contamination has expanded to over 500,000 pounds of product shipped across 28 states.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said the voluntary recall now applies to about 648,000 pounds of bulk tater tots produced by McCain Foods in Idaho. The agency warned the products could contain “clear, hard plastic fragments” that may create a choking hazard or cause injuries to the mouth and throat. Officials have reported no confirmed injuries.

The expanded recall covers more than 21,600 30-pound cases distributed mainly to foodservice clients. The FDA stated the products were not sold in retail grocery stores.

Newly included items feature additional lots of Ore-Ida Tater Tots and Sonic Tots packaged in 30-pound cases. The recall notice lists updated batch codes and use-by dates.

The recalled products were distributed in 28 states, including Ohio and Kentucky.

The FDA continues to classify the action as a Class II recall, meaning exposure could lead to temporary or medically reversible health effects, while serious consequences remain unlikely.

Consumers and institutions can visit the FDA’s recall website or contact McCain Foods customer service for details about refunds or proper disposal.
